Nora called Caleb from the curb outside Marisol's house, with the shoebox on her lap and Lily crying quietly in the driver's seat.
"Charlotte's alive."
There was a long silence on the line.
"That's not possible," Caleb said. "I saw the—"
"You saw a folder, Caleb. You saw a folder and you heard Dad say a sentence." She pulled the newest photo out of the box and looked at it again. The radio studio. The laugh. "Someone in Bend, Oregon has mailed Marisol a birthday card with Charlotte's picture in it every year for twenty-six years. The last one came eight months ago."
Another silence. When Caleb spoke again, his voice had changed. The lawyer was gone. What was left sounded young and scared.
"Mom and Dad are in the city tonight. Gala committee dinner at the Fairmont. They're staying over." A pause. "When Grandma was declared incompetent in 2017, I became trustee of the Callaway Family Trust. I've only ever looked at the current accounts. The old records are in banker's boxes in Dad's study at the lodge."
"How old?"
"All of them," Caleb said. "Ruth never threw away a piece of paper in her life."
